Thai couple charged with enslaving girl

A girl allegedly enslaved and tortured for five years is covered with scars and suffers from severe psychological problems, doctors in Thailand said Wednesday.
A couple who operated a dog-care business in Kamphaeng Phet province allegedly abducted the girl, identified only as Air, in 2008, the Bangkok Post reported. She was allegedly kept in a cage and tortured with scalding water.
Nathee Dangoon, 35, and his wife Rattanakorn Piyaworathamwas, 33, failed to appear for questioning Monday and are considered fugitives, the Post said.
Air is a Karen, a member of an ethnic minority who live mostly on the border with Myanmar, formerly called Burma. The Karen Network for Culture and the Environment urged Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to ensure that her alleged captors are arrested promptly.
Government spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said Air will need six months to two years of physical treatment. He said all expenses will be paid by the government.
Dr. Arthi Kruavit, a cosmetic surgeon at Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok, said Air cannot move her left arm because it is attached to her body by scar tissue, and she will need extensive skin grafts to regain the use of the arm.
“Air still has poor psychological health and she doesn‘t talk much to visitors and remains depressed. Doctors will treat her psychological trauma,” he said.
Police Lt. Gen. Wanchai Thanatkit said Nathee and Rattanakorn have a relative in the military who may be helping them escape. He said police believe the couple are still in Thailand and hope to arrest them within a few days. (UPI)

태국 정부 대변인 도사폰 세리락은 에어가 6개월에서 2년 정도의 물리치료가 필요할 것으로 보인다며 이를 위한 비용은 정부에서 부담할 것이라고 말했다.
방콕의 라마티보디 병원의 성형외과 전문의 다티 크루아빗은 에어의 팔이 반흔 조직에 붙어 움직일 수 없다며 팔을 다시 움직일 수 있게 하려면 피부 이식 수술이 필요하다고 말했다.
“에어는 정신적으로 쇠약해 사람들에게 말을 거의 하지 않고 우울해한다. 의료진은 정신적 트라우마도 함께 치료할 것이다”라고 말했다.
한편 경찰은 나티와 라타나콘 부부가 아직 태국 내에 있는 것으로 보고, 빠른 시일 안에 체포하겠다고 말했다.
