〈어려움, 쉬움, 실패, 도움〉

1. cinch [síntʃ] 쉬운 일

잡기 쉬운 ‘안장 끈’을 의미하던 단어로, ‘매우 쉬운 일’을 가리킨다.

I fully expected my new job to be very demanding physically and mentally, but to my surprise, it has been a cinch so far.

나는 새 일이 육체적, 정신적으로 매우 힘들 거라 예상했는데 놀랍게도 지금까지는 아주 수월하다.

● 전문 해커인 마이클에게 회사 보안 암호를 푸는 것은 식은 죽 먹기였다.

For a professional hacker like Michael, cracking the secret code of the company was a cinch.

2. conducive [kəndjúːsiv] 도움이 되는, ~에 좋은

‘~로 이끌다’라는 의미에서 유래하여 ‘~에 도움이 되는’, ‘~을 초래하는’이라는 뜻을 지닌다. 주로 전치사 to와 함께 conducive to의 형태로 쓰인다.

The mother told her son to turn down the music because it was not conducive to a good studying environment.

어머니는 아들에게 공부 잘되는 분위기에 도움이 되지 않으니 음악 소리를 줄이라고 말했다.

● 정부는 해외 투자에 유리한 환경을 조성하기 위해 노력하고 있다.

The government is working hard to create a conducive environment for foreign investment.

3. conundrum [kənʌ́ndrəm] 난제

원래 ‘말장난(pun)이 포함된 수수께끼’를 의미했는데, 뜻이 발전하여 ‘해결이 어려운 문제’를 일컫게 되었다.

Forced to choose between two women that he loved equally, the bachelor was stuck in a romantic conundrum.

그 미혼 남성은 똑같이 사랑하는 두 여인 사이에서 선택을 해야만 하는 사랑의 난제에 처해 있었다.

● 북한 핵 프로그램을 어떻게 해야 하는지가 동아시아 지역의 정치적 난제가 되고 있다.

What to do about North Korea’s nuclear program is shaping up to be the political conundrum of the East Asian region.

4. cumbersome [kʌ́mbərsəm] 번거로운, 귀찮은

물건이 크고 다루기 힘들거나 어떤 일의 절차가 번거롭다고 할 때 쓰는 단어다.

It took the three of us over 30 minutes to carry the large and cumbersome box up the steps and over the banister.

3명이 그 크고 옮기기 힘든 상자를 계단으로 올려 난간을 넘기는 데 30분이 걸렸다.

● 비자 면제 제도가 있기 전에는 미국 비자를 받기 위해 번거로운 절차를 거쳐야 했다.

Before the visa waiver program, we had to go through a cumbersome procedure to get a U.S. visa.

5. daunting [dɔ́ːntiŋ] 매우 힘든

tame과 어원이 같은 daunt는 원래 ‘겁주고 압도한다’는 뜻을 지닌다. daunting은 어떤 일이 매우 어렵고 힘들다고 할 때 쓰는 단어다.

The respective leaders of South Korea and the U.S. face the daunting task of convincing North Korea to dispose of its nuclear weapons.

한미 정상은 북한이 핵무기를 폐기하도록 설득하는 어려운 임무에 직면해 있다.

● 대통령은 성장과 분배를 동시에 추구해야 하는 어려운 도전에 직면해 있다.

The President faces the daunting challenge of pursuing economic growth and distribution at the same time.

6. debacle [deibɑ́ːkl] 실패, 와해

de(away)+bacle(block)로 이뤄진 단어로, 강의 얼음이 갈라진다는 의미가 담겨 있다. 특히 금융이나 경제 분야의 큰 혼란이나 재앙, 위기 등을 표현할 때 쓴다.

After the Savings and Loan debacle of the 80s, the U.S. continued its steady deregulation of the financial sector.

1980년대 저축대부조합 위기 이후 미국은 금융 부문에 관한 규제 철폐를 꾸준히 진행했다.

● 금융 위기는 국가 경제를 침체에 빠뜨리고 납세자에게 수 천만 달러의 부담을 지웠다.

The financial debacle sank the nation into a deep recession and cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.

7. doldrums [dóuldrəmz] 침체, 부진

원래 적도 부근의 바람이 불지 않는 지역을 지칭하는 항해 용어다. in the doldrums는 경제나 사업이 침체된 상태를 일컫는 말이다.

The winter doldrums are mostly attributed to lower serotonin levels in the brain due to lack of sunlight.

겨울에 겪는 우울함은 햇볕을 쬐는 시간이 부족해서 뇌의 세로토닌 수치가 낮아진 게 원인인 경우가 많다.

● 경기 침체가 계속되면서 특히 대졸자들의 취업 시장이 얼어 붙었다.

With the economy still in the doldrums, the job market is frozen, especially for those fresh out of college.
